Member of the Month

We are thrilled to recognize Garrett Hardwick as Polk County Fire District No. 1's Member of the Month. Since joining us as a volunteer in February 2022, Garrett has embodied the spirit and dedication that define our fire district. It seems only fitting, as Garrett was practically born into our community, following in the footsteps of his father, Ezra Hardwick. Ezra's legacy of achievement and commitment left an indelible mark on Garrett, who grew up alongside his father, absorbing the values and responsibilities of service.

Garrett's dedication is evident in his impressive response to calls. Balancing a full-time position at a 911 dispatch center, he managed to respond to 162 calls in 2025 and 205 in 2024. His commitment to saving lives was recognized on June 12 when he was awarded a Lifesaving Challenge Coin. This honor came after his crucial role in a CPR call on April 5, where his joint efforts helped resuscitate a patient who later returned home from the hospital.

In 2023, Garrett expanded his impact by working part-time with us on a grant from the Oregon State Fire Marshal's office, under the Oregon Wildfire Season Staffing grant, completing two tours. His dedication continued in 2024 as he contributed to the Risk Reduction grant, focusing on wildfire defensible space, community protections, and infrastructure resilience. Garrett has also been active in responding to conflagrations when our state requires additional resources.

Beyond emergency responses, Garrett enriches our community by participating in various activities. He contributes to our annual Pancake Feed and 4th of July Parade, supports the Stair Climb team in raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and provides ambulance coverage at Central High School football games.

Garrett is a remarkable young man, cherished by all as everyone's "little brother." His reliability, honesty, and work ethic are matched by his humor, charm, and infectious smile. Always present at the station, Garrett is eager to help, support the volunteer program, learn, educate, and exemplify teamwork.

Please join us in celebrating Garrett Hardwick, a valued member of our fire district family, whose contributions and character inspire us all. Thank you, Garrett, for your unwavering commitment and for making our community a better place every day.
